What is design? Who developed the universal visual concepts that designers have successfully deployed for centuries? These important questions and more are answered in this 20-tutorial journey by design historian and expert Mark Gatter.
Mark Gatter is known internationally as an Adobe Certified Expert, instructor and author. In addition to his vast graphic design training experience, he brings many years of commercial printing expertise from both the UK and California.
In this introductory course, you get an overview of the origins, history and processes of design spanning from the prehistoric Chauvet cave paintings to the subliminal techniques deployed in current advertising. Follow along as design guru, Mark Gatter, explains the story of design and how it impacts our daily lives and culture.
Mark first traces the historical progress of western art from the earliest artists known to man through the innovative artists and architects of the Italian Renaissance period. You learn all about the contributions of Giotto, Michelangelo and Da Vinci. As you explore the timeless designs of the Duomo, the Tomb of Pope Julius II, the Medici Mausoleum in the Basilica of San Lorenzo and more, you see how these visionary artists and their timeless creations laid the conceptual foundation that act as a blueprint for today's designers as they bring their art into the world.
Next, Mark accelerates into the 21st century. Here he begins to examine all the tools, processes and principles that form the modern designer's toolbox. So join Mark Gatter on this timeless journey into the world of graphic design and discover for yourself just what makes a graphic designer!
Really loved this intro course - I'm excited to keep going. The content is great and I enjoyed spending so much time in Florence during the Renaissance. My one critique is that the caption bubbles were pretty distracting throughout the course. Other than that, really good stuff in here!

It's a great introduction and short history lesson. I watched it in "hyperlearn" mode. Now I'm ready to get into the nuts and bolts in the next segments of the series......

It was basically an art histort course and not really a 101 on Graphic Design as how I expected it. Although this information is interesting and could prove useful.
